Haden Edwards received an empresario contract to settle 800 families near Nacogdoches. When he arrived with the families in the 1820s, he discovered people already lived there. When a group of men from Austin’s colony joined with Mexican soldiers to march on Fredonia, Haden and his brother fled to the United States.
